How-Tos (Ten Minute How-Tos for Busy Writers)

Selling Online

Offer a way for people to buy directly from you.  To do this, you need to know about state sales tax, a global e-commerce (allows people to buy through the Internet), and keeping accounts.  I know this is probably the last thing you want to think about but this is important to build your business.  If you need help, get in touch with an accountant or someone with experience.

ISBNs

If you want to have your books in bookshops, libraries, and other stores getting an ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is important.  Only one company, R. R. Bowker, supplies ISBN numbers, beware of Internet Copy-Cats.

 ISNs, EANs,and UPCs, oh my!

A word about ISBNs, EANs, and UPCs. Negotiating the alphabet soup as a serious independent, self-publisher.is tough.  ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number, you will want these numbers for your books to be placed in bookstores and libraries.  EAN stands for European Article Number. EAN bar codes are the lines that are scanned at the checkout.  Use of the EAN is necessary to have your books in most bookstores.  UPC stands for Universal Product Code.  UPCs are necessary for selling in department, grocery, and drug stores.  Typically, only books published in large volume use both.  Eventually, UPCs will be phased out and only EANs will be used.  Still, understanding and ordering the right codes are important.

Become a Public Speaker

Writing is often a solitary affair. Our lives tend to be scripted by what to do. If you are like me, you enjoy those moments of quiet, contemplative activity. Writing is nourishment. Yes, but like the turtle, we need to poke our heads out of the shell!

Public speaking for marketing your book is like air to the lungs. If you are not known as a speaker, start small. Do readings of your book at first. Offer to present your book at schools, public library, organizations, and colleges. As you become more sophisticated set up electronic slide shows. Some books translate well to skits. Check with local theatre people or get some buddies together. Whatever your style is make sure to have your books in the room for the audience to look at and purchase.

Making Money as a Writer

While working on the large projects, your own research project, epic novel, juvenile series, consider microwork.  While the earning potential may be small, earning for our writing is reinforcing.  Additionally, gaining public relations and networking through providing services on smaller jobs are added benefits.  Currently, three top-ranking microwork sites are: Fiverr.com, Zeerk.com, and TaskArmy.  Micro-freelancing can put some money in your pocket while being encouraging.  With all business opportunities, check them out carefully.  Also, you may need to learn fresh skills, like how to link payment systems, such as PayPal.
